Celebrating Black History Month

All this month I have been laser focused on honoring African American superheroes, historical figures, musicians, and actors in celebration of Black History Month. And here is what I have come up with as some of my own heroes and muses:

Above, (click on name to purchase) clockwise from top left: Uhura, Michael Jackson, Storm, Beyoncé, Frederick Douglas, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Rosa and Claudette, black hair, black Wonder Woman!

(Again, click on name to purchase) CLOCKWISE from top left: Black Wonder Woman, Muhammad Ali, Harriet Tubbman, Beyoncé, Martin Luther King Jr, Prince.

Clockwise from top left: Sade, MalcolmX, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Nick Fury (click on name to purchase)

AND now, some bonus pieces!

It all started with Nina Simone

Tupac Shakur!

Maya Angelou

AND Killmonger from Black Panther!

I can turn any of these into dog tag necklaces for men, but I also take special requests if one of your heroes is missing.

The Representation of all races, genders, sexualities and body types in comic books has made some big strides in the last few years, but there is certainly more work to be done. As a gay man I feel that the characters I should or could identify with are often gimmicky or relegated to the background. It is easy for me to make that leap and think of what it must be like for Latin, Asian, or African American men and women to see characters they love coming across as shallow stereotypes. I’m a white man, but I honestly get bored looking at white faces all the time across all media platforms, not just in my beloved comics. In that spirit I regularly honor one of my all time favorites, Storm on my etsy painted earrings page, but I went a step further by re-inventing some of DC Comics biggest heroes as powerful African, Asian, and Latin American women.

A favourite X-Man for many years now – Rogue. When I was in Junior High the X-Men lived in the Outback and I still consider those the best X-Men years. Their time there ended when they all (except Wolverine and Storm) escaped through the Siege Perilous. When Rogue returned the Reavers had taken over their home and she had to escape using by stealing Gateway’s powers. In doing so she became a gorgepus black woman and I was like, “please let her keep that look.” She did not. So, here she is, as a gorgeous black woman and in her Outback X-Men uniforms.

Another X-Woman who received a shocking (and permanent) makeover was Psylocke. Formally white British girl, now ridiculously sexy Ninja… irresistible

Available on my page as Glitter Psylocke, or

This is HaZel. She is a spotted owl who lives at the Portland Audubon Society. She flew into a tree when she was young and her wing feathers grew in deformed so she cannot fly. But she’s still rad. I hand-painted her on dense board so that she could exist as earrings!
